I suspect I know part of the answer in that during WWII the Vickers' ammunition was packaged using disposable belts and there was no need for a belt loader. I only have seen one WWI-era belt loader. Were they disposed of during WWII and is this why they seem so scarce?

I think so. It seems that even though the strip-type belts were used during the Second World War, they were loaded by hand a lot of the time.
My belt loader was sourced from Australia. They seemed to hold out the longest using the strip-type belts.
The weight of the belt loader, and the single-metal construction (i.e. all brass) would have made it attractive to melt down.
