Why is it that wartime bren slings are so hard to get hold of and very expensive. Thousands must have been produced surely?!

They only started making them the very end of 1944 and there weren't decent stocks of them until December 1945 before they started to replace the "short" Bren slings then is service. No doubt new guns had the long slings as part of their CES before then. Post war they went over to a green version pretty quickly and khaki slings would have been used up.
If you want the gun to look as used in WWII just get a bog standard rifle sling and depending on the mark of gun it is one or two Bren hooks, say £7 the lot. I think the elevated price of 58 inch Bren slings is all to do with collectors wanting them and reenactors not doing their research properly and thinking they need them. There used to be a thread with me whining about it...

Now that is very interesting, I had no idea that they were produced so late in the War.
I have a spare rifle sling - no bren hooks at present. Its a Mark 1m so do I go with one or two hooks?!
Cheers guys!

As Tom said 44 is the earliest for 'Bren' slings. 2 hooks will be fine for your MKIm.

The swivelling type of hook came first, a direct copy of those on the leather ZB slings. UK made ones would have come first, say about 1938.
Could anyone who has my article " A short history of Bren slings" put it up please as its beyond me to do it small enough with all the inserted images?

Gyles! Who was the Brummie gunsmiths that was selling minty hooks for about a quid each? I think it must be the cosmoline, my memorys shot to hell these days.
Great little shop, a few years back they were selling issue rifle slings for 2 quid a pop, mail order. The first 6 I orderd all turned out to be unissued long Bren slings! At that point there was a feeding frenzy and they all went but they were still advertising hooks the last time I saw a add'.
I think they advertise in Gun Mart...

So am I correct in thinking that the bren hooks on ebay are the early pattern ones?
I will have to have a thumb through Gun Mart at the newsagents tomorrow!!

A J Parker of Birmingham sold the hooks quite cheaply a few years ago. Even at Detling last w/e they could be had for not much more.
