Hello,
I am looking for information about this item, the "CHADWICK CARROLL 1941 LAMP AIMING M.G MK. III Hamilton. Canada" I have one of these boxes that has the lamp, a chain pull switch with leather strap, and an amber/yellow lense. I think it is about 85-95% original.
I would like any information on how it was used; the most I know is that it was used in some way with a WWI Vickers. I would also like to know how rare an item this is and what it would normally appraise for. It seems to be in good shape, especially for the era. I can email pictures if needed.
Thank you for any help you can provide.
Mike

Well Hi Mike,
The lamp you have was indeed used with the Vickers. It was used at night as an aiming point. The box would be placed out several meters from the gun position off to the side of the line of fire. The lamp would then be taken out and placed on the aiming post and pointed toward the gun. The string reel thats should be included would be attached to the switch and run back to the gun so the light could be turned on an off as needed. On the bottom of the box is a leather strap holding on a claw foot. The foot was released and pressed into the fround to keep the box stable. There was also a chain inside that was taken out and attached to a stake or around a tree to hold it in place. I will see if I can attach a picture of the setup.
As for value... depends... I have purchased them from $50 to $150US depending on markings and box configurations (accessories). In the UK I have seen them from 200 GBP an up.
just my 2 cents by the way...

This is a drawing from the Machine Gun Handbook (Technical) Vol. 1 Pam. #1 1940. A picture is also in Dolf's Book page 514 (Grand Old Lady of No Man's Land)
