I am in the process of acquiring one of the above - a magnificent collectible in it's transit chest et al - to add to my very modest collection of belt loaders. It looks very 'Navy' to me but I really don't know at this stage. Does anyone on this forum, or any other, know anything about these items? I have two de-milled rounds but would like to acquire a couple of links to complete the set. Any ideas? Any info would be appreciated.

No Idea Peter..... Would love to see pictures though.... Sounds very "cool" All you need now is the Gun to display with it.

Hi Craig. It was delivered last evening ;D and yup - a really serious piece of kit! Definitely a two man load.
It needs quite a bit of TLC & cleaning up but that's the fun part. The transit chest is green with bilingual (English/Afrikaans) markings but under the green is battleship grey - again very Naval.
Will get it looking pretty and then get pics posted.
Cheers

Nice item Peter.. As for Photobucket. When you got the the photo you want and put the cursor over it there will be a drop down menu appear. You want the bottom one. It will look like this when you copy it and place it in the dialogue box: i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt317/peterwells/DSC01781.jpg[/img (last square bracket missing on purpose)

Thanks Craig. Have achieved it copying your example but still can't get the drop-down list you mention.

Humm...... when you go into the main album and have all your pictures you should just be able to place your cursor over a photo and a drop down menu should appear with 4 options.... The top selection is for emailing a link to the pictures and the last one is for posting pictures on forums....

Ok Craig - got it thanks. I have to select the 'Share' option and then I'm away. Ta again. You don't by any chance have a connection with a few spare links for this creature? I have two rounds but have never seen the links. Cheers

Anybody with Royal Navy Connections? I reckon that's the most likely source but am also trying my luck with local Navy and Armoured Car chaps.

Peter,
Congratulations on your latest aquisition.
Is that an N under the 2 PR part of the description on the base?
If it is it should signify Naval. You will also find it on the cartridge bases.
Those empty woodscrew holes on the lid - could they be for blocks which hold the loader firmly in place when the lid is closed? I suppose it will be difficult to find another box to check!

Hi godwinhampton I will check more carefully on the markings - the brass has had quite a few knocks but I should be able to decipher it all. The two rounds that I have are completely sterile - ie. no heastamp at all. The screw holes are varied - the two on the r/h side are for a missing securing block (now replaced) as you suggest. Others had simply fallen out - also replaced but what a pregnant dog to find solid brass screws. The handle is secured to the lid by means of a block and leather strap and that accounts for some of the other screws in the lid. Are you a boffin on these items or have RN connections? If so could you point me in the direction of some links? Edit: Why does this d**n system change 'bxtch' to 'pregnant dog'

I assume we are talking about the Pom Pom anti-aircraft gun?
Going back perhaps 20 years ago there were a lot of these 2 pounder heads for sale minus their copper driving bands. The story was that they had been used as ballast in a ship. I still have one some where.
Links must be now be very rare as these guns must have been declared obsolete at the end of hostilities.
