Still looking to buy or trade some Imperial German MG accessories - but is there any guidance out there on identifying the field grey paint colour. Do we have a modern paint code id please? Secondly a collector here in Belgium has a 08 on a dreifuss tripod with accessories for sale if anybody is interested.

Hi Mark
I suspect 'field gray' is a bit like WW2 'olive drab' in that there is no official exact colour, and it varied slightly from maker to maker. I have had some made to match an existing original part and I will try to get you a Methuens number for it. With that you can get some made up.

I am now back in UK and have been informed that somewhere there is a facility where one can take an old paint example, it would undergo a scientific 'post-mortem' and all materials/components identified - and then a matching paint can be made! Once i find this place i will take both 'field grey' and 'helmet apple green' examples and get it made. I think the demand will be there too for additional cans/pots. Mark ps still looking for WWI accessories and also have spares
