HI there Lewis boffins.
Saw an unusual piece of kit over the week-end. A leather case apparently made for 6 Lewis drums - two layers of three. side-by-side. A beautiful piece in great condition. With UDF ownership marks and, I guess, for cavalry or other mounted use.
Any knowledge out there re. this item?

Hi Peter its part of the 1st pattern of packsaddlery for the lewis, Infantry (the Cav had the Hotchkiss Portative, in theory) used up until the 1930s, the second pattern had racks for metal boxes that had the canvas mag bucket thingies in side.
The Bren Infantry pack saddle mag carriers are just one of those with the 2 inside deviders chopped out and the Bren tools box is the same as the Lewis one except they have added a leather extension tube to take the bit of the Mk II cleaning rod that sticks out. I can't find the LoC but the 2 types are described in the 1931 Lewis training book.
