While subject of 'useability' is fresh, my No 1 in the SMG's (ignoring power or down-range effectiveness) in the Russian Ppsh 41. I fired a 5 shot burst at an 'Elton John' at 100 metres from a standing postion with 5 hits and NO muzzle rise. ;D I was still looking through the sights at the target after the 5 rounds were fired. How effective those 5 rounds would have been on a real target at 100 metres is debateable! Another very controllable gun was the MP40, probably because of its slow rate of fire. The M1928A1 and M1A1 Thompsons are pleasant to shoot but do get some muzzle rise. The M1921 is a real buzz but climbs even more. The L2 Sterling is very good, and the suppressed L34A1 is even better. Uzi, Stens, Carl Gustav M45, etc work fine but won't win any points for anything other than room clearing. The Brno ZK383 is a superbly made and very controllable gun, especially with the rate reducer in place. If I was obliged to have one for short range work, I would probably be happiest with the L2 Sterling. Having said that, a good rifle is preferable to all as it tends to keep things further away! ;D I would carry a pistol for the short range stuff under those circumstances, but only because I am extensively practised with one out to 50 metres or so. Without the training and proficiency, a pistol is not much use.

I should add that I consider the H&K MP5 to be a liability to the user!

About 20 years ago I was at the NZ Army Base Ordnance Depot, Trentham, buying a heap of L1A1's and I noticed a pile of 'dead' MP5's (about 30 guns) in the corner. Our SAS had been using them and they were 'beyond economic repair'. Bear in mind that we only have a fairly small SAS and the guns were still fairly new. I have had personal experience with 3 MP5's, all of which have given jamming problems at various times. They are very ammo fussy, and also have a few little recesses which can gather crud which affects functioning. The worst problem encountered was one gun which persistently failed to eject and jammed cases in the front of the trigger housing which meant a full strip to get things going again. If you read a report on the Iranian Embassy action in London you will find that there were some jams there as well. As a gunsmith I tend to see problems rather than successes, but H&K firearms are disproportionately represented, especially in the area of broken parts. Their machining is good but the design is generally garbage. H&K are definitely world leaders when it comes to marketing, but their guns are not good.

I have since read about two other people experiencing the 'case in the trigger housing' jam with an MP5, as well as a myriad of other problems. Several people say that they are totally reliable if you keep them clean, service them regularly, and replace critical parts on a regular basis! That is not my idea of reliability!

I agree, but from a user point of view.... when all you have is the MP5, you make d**n sure its clean and get it serviced regularly so it doesn't go NS on you... I personally like the Sterling.... but the PPSH-41 is also a nice piece of kit.... as is the MP38 and MP40. For what it is, the Sten is also not bad. just my 2 cents....
