Beginning to sound like monomania... Has anyone seen the anti-aircraft tripod for sale on ima-usa.com, and if so, any thoughts? The mounting itself looks to be the top of a sangster tripod, but soldered onto a metal stansion. Shame such things can no longer be exported to England.
Richard
PS. Still looking for a pair of fibre plugs and a Mk. I slide for a tangent sight.

Hi Richard,
I have seen it and it looks quite impressive but I have seen various types of mounting so it is porbably a local modification rather than a 'pattern' mount.
I can't see any problems importing it in the UK if someone has got the cash to stump up for shipping, import duties etc.
Regards
Richard

Rich, have you ever seen a tripod, where the 3rd leg has different leg/foot arrangement?
The one I have seen has the normal tube to about 6" from the foot. It then becomes a 'T' shaped affair (like 2 L angle iron bits back to back) to the normal foot. It looks quite professional, could it be a genuine variation or a battle field repair? if it is a repair, i'm surprised it was never correctly repaired.

Could be the base a foreign or commercial adaptation. I will have a browse through my tripod information tonight but can't remember for sure.

Turkish I think. I had forgotten but am at work now so can't check again!
Craig (Missing_something) could confirm as I think he has a Turkish adapted Vickers.

By the looks.. its an american Colt tripod. (similar one on pg 429 of Dolfs Book) The Turkish one has a similar foot but an opening to take the AA leg and a larger traversing dial.
just my 2 cents...

Could be Colt M1915. I have a manual with lots of diagrams at home so will check. I knew about the traversing dial but thought that it could just have been swapped over. I though the AA leg opening may not have been visible from that angle.
Cheers,
Rich

Brit, This is the same type of tripod that was with my Vickers when I purchased it circa 1990 from Regimentals. I sold it circa 1995, so this is from memory, and three Polaroid photos that I still have.
The guns and tripods were part of a batch that came through Charnwood. Most of the tripods were 1944 dated, but as I wanted the gun for a WW1 motorcycle combination, Malcolm supplied my gun (L3692) with an undated tripod. I never did get around to buying the motorcycle, and the gun was subsequently sold on (at a loss) to buy a revolver for competition use.
Does anyone know where it is now? L3692

Does anyone know where it is now? L3692 It was with Doug Preece as of 25/01/2000 but obviously not now! Originally came from Greece as one of the ones they released in 1988 after having bought them from War Office post-WW2. Thanks for the pics. Would you like me to post them? Rich

Having looked through the manuals, it was inconclusive as they all deal with the more developed commercial tripods but the Gale & Polden handbook for the .300 Vickers (i.e. Colt) used by the Home Guard and page 205 of GOL shows this tripod with Colt guns so it must be that one. What is wrong here though is the cross head seems to have been replaced with a British one - not unlikely as the Lend-Lease scheme would have muddled some up.

Richard,
By all means post the photo's if you think they will be of interest.
When I sold it, it was via Gunshop at East Barnet. The purchaser can't have held on to it for much longer than I had, not if Doug Preece had it in Jan 2000.
I wonder if the gun and tripod are still together?
