I have just purchased my first Sten Gun and was wanting some help finding out more about it.
All I know is its a MK2 with British markings. I don't know how to upload pictures so I will do my best to describe the markings.
BARREL: BNP with what looks to be a crown above it, 9mm P, .75c or z, 9.5 TONS, LTC inside crossed swords.
BARREL SHROUD: P in a square, then a scroll under an multi headed arrow?
MAG HOUSING TOP: STEN Mk II then a M near mag catch.
MAG HOUSING BOTTOM: 99373, S106 under serial number, R randomly stamped.
BOLT: FY stamped. A polished area with 88 engraved on the bolt.
TIGGER GAURD: S234 stamped inside, under the trigger.
TRIGGER MECH HOUSING: S68 stamped into it.
The barrel, receiver and bolt are all stamped BNP under a crown.
All the major parts have been heavily stamped 88 as if it has been through some sort of refurb process?
The barrel and shroud are painted black and the rest is what looks to be grey paint or heavy parkerizing?
The mag is painted black with JL88 stamped in it. it also has a circled Y then M/158.
It appears to be original and tidy for it age appart some a couple of rust spots. The rifling looks as if it hasn't done a lot of work, not a lot of wear on the other parts.
There is also a few random letters and numbers lightly stamped on the gun in various places that appear to have no purpose.
Clear as mud??
Any help you can give me would be great. Thanks.

The crown over BNP and the crossed Sceptres are Birmingham Nitro Proof. The letters within the sceptres are the Inspector and Date Codes.

Thanks for the help. Is there a website or book that could help me trace year of manufacture, where it may have ended up, or if it saw combat??

The year of manufacture is probably early 1942. There is no way of telling where the gun was issued or used as they simply did not bother to record that information. Peter Laidler's book 'The Sten Machine Carbine' from Collector Grade publications is the absolute last word on the subject!
