That is certainly a refreshing attitude, even if they are de-activated. We had a similar situation here a couple of years ago when the Army announced that all the old Cadet No8 & No9 .22 rifles were going to be melted down. They relented in the face of a public outcry and they were put up for public auction, netting a return for the Cadet Force of over $200,000. ;D
