It is Richard Knight of Vickers Machine Gun Society 'fame'. I do not think that he is a member of the board but there is a VMGS member on here.
I personally think it is probably not 'that' expensive considering the work that would have to go into making a good one. I have not seen a reproduction one so I don't know how they compare to an original or how much work has gone into it.

Doesn't seem too bad a price, I know an enginnering workshop that does old car and bike bits and they would charge something like £40 an hour plus materials! Regards Matt Gibbs

Craig,
That is the Hotchkiss 'birdsfoot' tripod and not a Sangster mount. They are totally different items.
The reason they have that as a Vickers item is because they have a 'crosshead' adapter that can make it a universal item. I have never heard of such an item in service though.

Thanks Richard. I was aware of the difference. I posted it to show that in the US they were $150 for the Hotchkiss tripod. (I originally thought they were repro's as well, IMA claims that they are original.) I also saw a damaged original Monopod on Gun Broker for $500 US.

Hi Craig,
Sorry if I was teaching you to suck eggs - didn't mean to. It is a mistake I have had to explain to others so presumed (wrongly!) that the same mistake was here.
Thank you very much for bringing gun broker to my attention - I hadn't been on that site for a couple of years and then they didn't have any vickers stuff. Just did a quick search and found some interesting stuff. I cannot afford it at the moment but the last monopod I heard of for sale cost £500 in 1999ish.
Back to Sangster mounts. I have been reliably informed that there are only two Sangster mounts in private collection in the UK that are greater than 50% original - they have both had replacement leg portions but that's it (and the original legs are with them). Others are based on relic items and have been heavily restored. Now considering that, they would be worth on the serious collectors market, I believe, in excess of £5000 each. They simply are not available on the open market. I am unsure of what is available in the US but I have never seen any change hands in the ten years I have been collecting Vickers items. I would, therefore, believe that for most people a reproduction at less than 10% of the cost of an original is a good way to go.
I hope this is of interest to people.
Regards
Richard

In addition to the last message, I can 99.9999% guarantee that the two in the UK will not come up for sale ever again.

Hello all.
As far as I know, I'm the only Member of the Vickers Machine Gunners Society who actually posts on this site, and am the one Richard Fisher is referring to.
As Richard Fisher has already mentioned, even a tripod containing ANY original parts is rare, and Dickie Knight has mentioned to me several times now the huge prices even these "restored" tripods are worth (in the mid-£1000's).
I've seen and handled probably this tripod at some of our living history events before, and unless you know what to look for (Dickie always builds in some deliberate errors with his repro items to tell them apart from originals) they are absolutely spot on.
He's made one or two that I know of, and they take a lot of time and effort to make, and to my mind are cheap at the current price on Ebay, and I am seriously considering having a crack at that one.
Hope this has been of some help.

I guess I am just a cheap ^$#^*..... I am sure it is probably worth that and more... me being cheap and broke doesn't help when I see something that I want to get to put on my (also rare) Vickers version. (WW2 Turkish 8mm conversion). Well, I guess I go on saving my pennies.... Thanks Andrew and Richard for your 2 cents

Thanks Andrew and Richard for your 2 cents You never know, someone else might start making them in bulk, then the price will drop - until then, he's the only one I know who's ever reproduced them, and the prices will continue to stay quite high... Hi Andrew, Thanks for the input. It was you I was referring to. I hope you are well. Regards Richard All's well here at the moment, hope the same is true with you Richard, glad to have been of some help.
