The M122 designation was introduced in the 1960's when the old M2 tripods were used for the M60 and later M240 (MAG58) machine guns. The tripod is the same but the pintles are different. Some old M2's were simply renumbered, and some new ones were made with the M122 designation. It is a current issue item with the M240.
