I was paint stripping a 1918 dated cross head when I noticed that the elevating hand wheel (with notches and dimples) is made of steel, not bronze.
Is the steel wheel a late World War One change or is it post-WWI or even WW2?

I also have a number with steel hand wheels that are early dates. I'll have to check all of them to see how the dates correspond.

Thanks Richard. I have 3 1918 crossheads of which 2 have the bronze wheel and one has a steel wheel. My 1916 dated crosshead has a smooth bronze wheel for the wheel cover.
