I have one of the above which differs slightly from that in fig. 110 in Dolf's Browning Vol 3. The year of manuufacture in fig 110 has the full year (1942) as part of the mould. Mine has the '19' moulded but the '42' is stamped, but is otherwise identical Can anybody confirm if this a known variant?

I've had a look, my tripod is a 1941 and is cast 1941. I wonder if yours may be a 1941 dated plate, where the 41 has been removed and 42 stamped in its place.

I have a McEvoy tripod with the stamped style as shown 111, and also a blank Rock Island plate that is yet to be stamped in the style of 109. I just wish I had the M1917A1 gun to go on my tripod!

Chris, what you suggest is a distinct possibility. There are at least three different layers of paint on it and today I am loathe to strip it - maybe tomorrow my curiosity will get the better of me. Sorry Rod - can't help you

Your theory absolutely correct Chris. Stripped some of the paint off and it clearly shows an area that has been ground and polished and the punched '42' added.

So it would appear then that they recycled the unused 1941 plates. I wonder how long this happened for.

I wonder if throwing some serial numbers at it would help?
If any one finds a spare data plate, grab it for me as I've another tripod where its missing.
