I have just obtained a 2" Mortar Mk VIII* from an old retired RSM and had it put on my ticket under an amnesty provision today. I knew that the Mk VIII was a short barrelled version for Airborne use but mine has the standard 21" barrel. It is clearly marked Mk VIII* and made by ROF C (presumably Cardiff?). Any info would be appreciated.

Hi Rod the Mk 8* was a standard infantry version with the 21.37" barrel over the 14" of the Mk 8 and has a strengthened breech piece (I gues the longer barrel kept the pressure up for longer and required it). Do you have copies of the relevant handbook, training manual, illustrated parts lists, inspection standards and armourers precis? Got one myself when they were flogging off those cheap Ex Belgium ones. Still looking for a minty postwar muzzle cover and short sling if any one knows of any floating about? ATB Tom

Cheers Tom! I will have a look through my pile of CD's as I think that info is on one of them. One of our local re-enactors has one and has made some dummy 2" bombs with a 12 guage hole right through the centre. He uses black powder blanks and drops the bomb down the tube, lines it up on the 'target' and pulls the lanyard. The crowd always look up to follow the path of the bomb and he quickly upends the tube and drops out the fired 'bomb' and is ready to repeat the performance when the crowd looks back. It works a treat! ;D

No worries! if you can't find them I'll syick them on a DVD as there will be a couple of new IPLs to send south as soon as we get a new scanner. The old one has died a death and the one we were given to rreplace it won't work despite herselfs best efforts! Still can't complain after all the hammer we gave the old one.
If the rain stops we are off to the Preston military show later.
