its the cleaning kit box for the Bren pack saddlery which in turn was a recycled design origanally for one of the Lewis Pack Saddle kits, they just added the leather tail to take the end of the cleaning rod, heres mine filled OK I don't have a Mk IIB rod or even a Mk V with the loop handles but you get the idea. The design even had the redundent cut outs in the wooden blocks in the lid to take the spare Lewis barrel I think. It don't fit a Bren one I know and there was a seperate bag for the infantry and saddle box for the cavalry versions of the Bren equipment ATB Tom PS I have a spare in about the same condition as michielvr if any one wants one,, empty of course!

No worries, incidentally the big leather boxes for the ammunition on the Bren saddle are the same as the ones on the Lewis ammunition saddle but with the slopping internal deviders taken out. Pairs of utility pouches were meant to be used to store the Bren mags inside the leather cases but I've always wondered if those little brown canvas satchels for Bren mags were also for going in these cases...
