I bought a cleaning rod for my WW2 Vickers. It's the style that has a 3 3/4 inch oval handle and a grease/ guide ball. A photo is far left or far right of page 460 of TGOL. It's suppose to fit in the lid of the transport case but the slot in the lid that is closest to the handle is about 1 inch deep with a wood pivot closure. This wide slot doesn't keep the rod in place and the hole in the end block has a wide hole maybe for the guide ball and an inner smaller hole that is to small for the rod to slide into. Also there isn't a way to keep the rod from sliding back and forth. Is the guide ball suppose to stay on the rod or stored in another location in the box ? What am I doing wrong that this rod doesn't stay securely in the lid ? Thanks Bruce D. Jarrett

That's because it doesn't go in the lid of the chest. The rod that goes in the lid is the Lewis gas cylinder rod which is wood.
The Vickers cleaning rod goes on the inside of the front of the chest.
As you face the chest, lid open, look on the inside front. On the right you will (or should) find a little leather loop secured by screws. On the left you'll find two wooden hooks, one below the other. That's where the handle goes. The cleaning tip goes through the leather loop.
The only accessories that are carried in the chest for the Vickers are the cleaning rod and one spare barrel.
Hope this helps....
