I am into living history and wanting to start a US WW1 machinegun squad and have a Brit Vicker's (recent Turkish/Greece surplus?) dewat gun which I want to make look more like a Colt M1915. The Mk IV tripod has a large dial (turkish?), which I have removed and the tripod still seems to work ok. The upper lock screw is in the wrong position it seems but I can live with that. I have a Colt M1915/18 muzzle attachment and it fits directly on the Brit water jacket, so that's a big plus. My main question is: are the sights on a Colt centerd or offset like on the Brit Vickers? The only pics I can find (Dolfs/Canfield) seem to indicate US gun had centred sights. If so I can fix up a center front sight, but what to do about the rear sight is troubling.
Thanks, SteveD

Maybe I could rig a M1917 Browning rear sight if the sightsa centralized.
Thanks, SteveD

Hello Steve
The sight on the Colt 1915 are off-centre just like the Brit guns.
Apart from the major difference in the rear sight (a 1917 sight is probably the best one 4 u 2 to use there) there is a small diff in the front sight. The US gun has the sight in a tunnel unlike the two 'ears' on the Brit gun. Easy to replicate and I can supply you with the dimensions in need.

Thanks, peterwells, for your answer. Sorry for the delay in responding but had all but given up on receiving any help here on my quiry. I can see the diff in the hooded front sight but the angle of the pics I have makes it look like it might be centralized. I'll probably just weld on a hood to the existing sight. Do you think that would be visually close enough? Glad to know that M1917 rear probably my best bet. I have a Colt 11 m/m balloon buster parts gun. To bad the Colt markings are on the water jacket which, of course, is the air cooled avaiation type. But thats OK, having the correct maker's name might be to close to making a fake.
Again, thanks Steve

Hi Steve
A hood placed over the Brit front sight will be somewhat larger (wider and higher) than on the original Colt gun but that may still suit your purpose.
Cheers
