Morning All,
Just a quick post to say that if anybody would like to see my Vickers MG collection on display, then I will be doing so between the 17th and 24th October.
It's not often I get the chance to get it out of the loft as I don't live with the collection and have to keep it 'tidy' most of the time. I had hoped to do so earlier in the year and have a bit bigger display but couldn't do so. This means it's not going to be the whole collection including the big items but I do have a couple of rooms that it will be in.
It will be in Swindon, Wiltshire, and if anybody wants more details and to book some time to come up, then email me at richard@vickersmachinegun.org.uk
Regards
Richard

Richard, I am sure I speak for most members. We would like to see the photos after the display!

Of course I will. If you need to whet your appetite in the meantime, I have just set up a new page on the website with some of the displays I have done. www.vickersmachinegun.org.uk/displays.htmThanks, Richard

Well done displays Richard! I know only too well how difficult it is to cart everyhing out, set it up, answer endless questions, then take it all down again. But we keep on doing it ......

"answer endless questions" i second that, whenever i set up a vickers display the number one question i get is: is that a flamethrower? And with the rangefinder besides it: is that a bazooka?

They see the condenser can and tube and ask 'Does it run on petrol then?'

Well, I had the main visit from five Devon & Dorset veterans who did their National Service as part of the MG Platoon between 1960 and 1962. Very interesting and certainly valued them coming. I really enjoyed the day and I think they did as well. One of them brought their son, son-in-law and two great-grandsons with them as well and it was brilliant to see all the different generations interested.
I then had a reenactor and an ex-REME armourer come and have a look of an evening. They got a bit of a shock as there was some misunderstanding and they thought they were coming to look at drawings and plans. There were a couple of very surprised faces when I said we could just go upstairs and have a look at the guns in the flesh!
Then, when buying a poppy a week-or-so ago, I started talking to one of the gentlemen as I noticed he had a Korean War Veterans Association badge. He was Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders andm, whilst Rifle Company, worked alongside the Vickers a lot and wanted to see the collection. But what turned out to be the bigger surprise was that he knew a Vickers MGer in the area who was in the Welsh Regiment during the Korean War. It turns out he lives at the bottom of the village where I keep the collection (probably only 1000m away from them!). They both visited today and it was fantastic to be able to see them enjoy themselves and I said such a brilliant few hours.
I'll definitely be getting the guns out again next year (100th anniversary of adoption by the British Army) and will hopefully be able to have the same sort of visits again.
The guns will be out for another couple of weeks yet and I will be taking some photos of them along with the different uniforms of the 99 years since they were adopted as of next Saturday.
If anybody is able to get to Swindon and does want to see them in the next few weeks, then please let me know.
Regards
Richard

Thank you very much. It's always expanding and I think I worked out that, although that was all the guns, I have enough uniforms and equipment for another 5 or 6 mannequins - that would certainly add to the atmosphere!
Oh yeah, there's also the Limbered Wagon for the MG that I have part of and all of the other ammunition boxes.
One day it will all be on display!
Thanks for the kind comments.
Richard
