Today is the 99th anniversary of the adoption of the Vickers MG by the British Army. Little is done to remember items of equipment but it's important to recognise the importance and impact that items, such as the Vickers MG, have had on modern warfare.
It's also important to remember all those who used the Vickers, and their comrades. I've recently been host to a number of ex-Machine Gunners, including National Service and Korean War Veterans. They all have a story to tell and it seems to come out easier when they're around their old equipment and the Vickers. The smile on the face of a Veteran who hasn't sat behind a Vickers for over 50 years is brilliant!
In preparation of a campaign of mine to promote such remembrance and the ability of Veterans to come close to the equipment they used, I have formed the Vickers MG Collection & Research Association. It is a term I have used for some time but I have, this week, formed it as a not-for-profit company, limited by guarantee, incorporated in England (Registered Number: 07855202).
Over the next year, I will be working to promote the Vickers and trying to get my collection on display as much as possible. If anyone has any ideas that could support this, please let me know.
Regards
Richard
