Hi All, happy new year to everyone.
Can anyone help with dimensions, drawings, photos, etc of aircraft-mounted Vickers Mark V .303 machine guns?
These were used in the CAC Wirraway and I'm trying to get some detailed information to generate CAD drawings and detailed 3D models of these guns for my "virtual Wirraway" project.
Regards, Derek

There are a couple of books available with detailed photos. Whereabouts in the world are you? There may be one local!

Hi Richard, I'm an Aussie living in Belgium (near Antwerp).
I'm also visiting the UK this week. Hoping to get to the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds and RAF Museum Hendon to see if they have anything.
I found a lead suggesting I look for "Air Publication 1641A: Vickers .303in Aircraft Mk II, III and V guns", so that's my starting point.

Well, sadly the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds had no Mark V's in their colleciton, and no reference books with any details.
And I didn't book my visit to the RAF Hendon Reading Room early enough, so I didn't get a chance to do any detailed research there. At least I was able to get some good photos and measurements of a Vickers GO in their Walrus seaplane - which turned out to be a wooden replica!
Still looking...

OK, I was able to get a contact at the research department at the Royal Armouries (Curator of Modern Weapons), so they are checking what may be available. I'll let you know if they find anything.

I'm still waiting to hear back from the Royal Armouries Curator, but in the meantime I found a drawing on the internet (link removed, since it doesn't relate to the Mark V)
This drawing looks like an Air Ministry Mark II, can anyone identify which model this drawing covers?

It doesn't match any 100% and the fact that it is identified as .30 and 11mm lends it to be an American design but it is similar to the Mk. II, II*, III and Japanese Type 97 (especially the muzzle attachment part on the latter).
What's the source?

I'm making my way back to the Royal Armouries next week, with some time booked in their library... let's see what I find. They also have a part-time researcher looking into it for me...

Well done Derek. I understood Royal Armouries were twitchy about giving out full drawings so glad you got them.
Just one small point in your text: .303-inch ammn is 7.7mm not 7.62mm.

Hi Richard, Royal Armouries were actually very helpful once I got onto their library staff. I'm still trying to follow up with them for dimensions, as there are none on the drawing they passed on.
Thanks for the correction on the calibre. I think I picked that up from somewhere else, but a quick calculation to check would have been a good idea!

I'm afraid unless there has been a big change of rules although they will happily let you have General Assembly drawings of MGs they will not let you have and DD(E) that shows dimensions pf presure bearing parts that could be used to manufacture them. I've had dimension drawings of furniture such as butts from them and over a thousand sheets of parts for accesories but nothing presure bearing, that includes the bodies as well as barrels and internals.
I dare say if you are some sort of liscenced manufacturer they may let you have them for a fee and I think the other exception (at least back in the days when it was MoD run the place) was if you were a Friendly Foreign Goverment.
The GAs are absolutely to scale however so for cosmetic perposes you could work backwards if you can get a few accurate measurements from a real example or part they will let you have the dimensioned drawing of to make a scale.
