This is a bit closer to the mark as it relates to a GS shovel to go in a leather cover as part of a set of P.M.G. ;-{D)
My apologies to who ever it was who once told me as I have forgotten but what is the correct finish for a 1942 General Service shovel as when it was first made? I picked up one for a few quid a number of years ago from a pile of 1990s dated ones which has numerous layers of paint on it and I would like to do it up as it was first issued.
Whats set me off is while shopping for some bits for the middle sons birthday I aquired a rather fine GS shovel but with a blade made from what looks like phosphor bronze and marked "Non magnetic" which i assme is for EOD. Sad to say but I'm going to tart it up to hang from a beam but while I'm doing that I intend to do the other up to go in the collection proper.
For anyone interested the new one is marked
THE BEST IN THE WORLD CALDWELLS ENGLAND BF (ARROW) 9 90 15141 NON-MAGNETIC
and off to one sound a round stamp with WARRINGTON STOCKTON HEATH 1770
Iv'e a big bronze magazine knife somewhere that will go well with it! I'll get my coat....
