what seems to work the best and last the longest, brass or steel strips?

I believe that the Brits did not make any Portative strippers in brass, but it is possible some were made. I have seen hundreds of steel ones, but never a brass one for the Brit guns. However, the Japanese provided both brass and steel 7.7 strippers for their T92 HMG, and the brass versions of these are very common in the US. The T92 strippers are suitable for use in the Portatives in .303 aS well. 8 Lebelr strippers are also very common and can be used in the Portatives, but the tabs need to be shrtened slightly to clear the feedway.

I support Bob's comments. I have only seen Japanese brass strips while all the rest have been steel. Running the non .303 strips through the strip reforming tool helps them work with .303. Try and rotate through your strip supply if you plan on doing much shooting to avoid premature loosening of the strip claws.
