The after-market mounts (check Brownells website) for the FAL/L1A1 are very good and will give optimal accuracy when correctly fitted. The SUIT sight and mount is good from an authenticity point of view but you will be dissapointed with the accuracy. The L1A1 with a good barrel will do about 2" groups at best. The FAL with a good barrel will do better. I have converted many L1A1's and the best accuracy is when the barrel is shortened to about 3" - 4" in front of the gas port (which needs to be opened up slightly for reliable functioning). You lose some velocity but the groups are 1" or better with good surplus ammo.

Woodsy can tell me how to remove the dust cover. The reason for all the questions is that I just purchased this gun used with no manuals or tools. I am having a hard time locating them.

Woodsy can tell me how to remove the dust cover. The reason for all the questions is that I just purchased this gun used with no manuals or tools. I am having a hard time locating them. There are no tools needed to field strip the L1A1 other than a cartridge. Remove the magazine, cycle the bolt a couple of times and apply the safety catch (do not dry fire the hammer), break the rifle open with the latch on the left rear (DO NOT attempt to open the rifle if the bolt is locked back), remove the bolt assembly by pulling on the 'rats tail', the dust cover slides off to the rear, the action hinge screw is undone using the base of the cartridge (or a screwdriver) and removed, the hinge pin is pushed out using the cartridge, the button on the gas plug is pushed in and the plug is rotated to the left 90 degrees (CAUTION allow the plug to come forward under control otherwise the piston spring will throw the plug and piston out of the rifle with some force. ALWAYS perform this operation away from your eyes!). The bolt can be separated from the carrier by pulling forward and down. That is a full field strip and all cleaning can be done without further disassembly. Most normal cleaning can be done just by removing the bolt assembly, gas plug and piston, leaving the rest of the rifle together. Assemble in the reverse order. Make sure the groove is the top position when the gas plug is installed or the rifle will not function. DO NOT attempt to remove the buttstock and return spring system without the special tool! Ther is also a special tool for disassembling the bolt, and another for removing burrs in the gas block (caused by hammering from extended use on the wrong gas setting).

Hi All unfortunately our disc burner has died a death (looks like it needs completely replacing) or I'd offer to do it myself but there are scanned in copies of the various Commonwealth training manuals, armourers notes, illustrated parts lists and handbooks that we did a while back that would be probably of great use to Boneshead or does anyone know if the same are up on the net somewhere? Our broadbands rubish or I'd send them down the wire.
