Hi I wonder if some one could please help with a ammunition box i am thinking of selling, If you could give me an idea on value and confirm what No. and Mk it is, and if it is maker marked or dated were would one normally find the marks. The pictures give a very good idea of its condition there is a split on the inside of one handle but the other side of the handle is good and all the leather is still strong and supple. linkThanks Terry s1141.photobucket.com/user/smle/slideshow/vickers%20box

Terry
It looks like a No 7 and there would usually be a stamping on one of the ends which should give the maker, type and year of manufacture.
Looks to be in fine condition and worth a few hundred to the right buyer.

Hi Richard Thanks for the information, I was originally uncertain if it was a No 8 or 7, But knowing of your expertise in all things Vickers I am happy that it is defiantly a No 7. I did think the mark would be on one of the ends as this is were there is the most paint. any idea if the stampings are at the top or at the base as i can see me ending up removing all the paint on the ends. Its just I have been asked if it is a WW1 box did they make the No 7 after WW1? Thanks again Terry

Certainly not aware of any post-WW1 production of the No. 7 and I think there were only a few limited production runs during the War. There should be a picture of my own No. 7 but in a pre-restored state (ie still painted bright blue having been used as a tool box!). www.vickersmachinegun.org.uk/acc-ammunition.htmIf it's not there at the moment, I'll pop one up shortly. Hi I have removed some paint to reveal box marked Eli GRIFFITHS&SONS 1938 BIRMINGHAM. Did not find Mk No. but assume it to be a No8? Thanks Terry
