I am one of the unfortunates that does not have Dolf's book on Vickers. I am looking for information on the chrome tipped Australian .303 barrels. What time period would they date from?
Thanks

I've not heard of a chrome Vickers barrel. Could it be a browning 303 MkII barrel?

They appear to be standard water cooled Vickers barrels, nothing like a Browning barrel. The bores I have not checked to see if they are lined, still full of storage grease.

I would think they were made in the 1950's. Normally Lithgow products are year dated with a small stamp amongst the proof marks (e.g. MA54).

Rod,
Thank you, that was my guess as well. I looked very carefully at the barrels with a glass and could find no dated proofs which I found odd as you say most Lithgow products do have such a marking somewhere.

The date is usually at the top of the chamber below the proof mark (e.g. 5.44 = May 1944). Can't quite read it in your picture (maybe 2.39 - February 1939? makes sense based on low serial number). The only thing I find odd is the last 4" of your barrels are not blued. I have 4 - 5 NOS Australian WWII .303 barrels and they are all completely blued.

That will be the chroming and I don't think you can blue the chrome.
