I have just obtained a similar box, dated 1916. It still has the original latch, and the inside of the lid has a paper list of the original contents. What is the height of your box? Mine has a plywood base and I think it has been cut down. I also need to know where the partitions go, although I can see the outline of a couple of them. My box was painted gray on the outside but I carefully stripped it and found the original lettering. I will post some photos in the next few days. The original Spares & Tool boxes were leather, and I think we both have an interim box, before the introduction of the rare Mark ! wooden box. The paper label in my box is headed "Box, Spare Parts & Tools, .303 Inch Vickers' Gun (Leather)" so it was clearly intended for the original leather box. It is dated 1915, as are the brass hinges.

There were large numbers of first world war dated boxes when the Australian consignment first arrived.
The rare box is the WW2 designed and produced version (not sure what mark) which I have only ever seen one example.

I have a very tidy Aussie WW2 box (Mark II) which I have half filled with the correct items. All of the parts tins were in place when I got it, although they were empty. I need another feed block and some spare parts and tools (screwdriver and belt repair pliers) to complete it.

Hi Gary
Mine has definitely been cut down (about 5" high), and also appears to be of a slightly thinner wood. Mine has the outline on the back wall of the three semi-circular shapes and also two vertical outlines on the right wall. In some respects the outline of the partitions in yours is similar to the WW2 box. The maker of my box is H C S and there is also a stamp of H SIMES on one corner. I thought this might have been the name of the person who previously owned it, but it is very neatly stamped, and could be the maker. Does anyone else have this stamp on an H C S box? Hopefully I will find the time this weekend to do the photos.

As to all the other questions, have a look at the website as all the photos of the internals of the boxes should be there in the accessories: spares section. If you need any more detailed photos then let me know and I can email some to you. Regards Richard
