rounds, as many as 15 to 50 before light hit. Always stops with firing pin released. As the gun actually fires from the safety device, nothing makes sense.......recocking cycle gets another lite hit..........all components must be in correct alignment for the trigger bar to release the firing pin, but still another lite hit, maybe 8-10 then another string of fired rounds or maybe only one, then two or many!!!!! Sometimes the gun will light hit the very first round......maybe several after that. Then a burst.........I have tried several locks, I have mixed parts from locks. This has happened the last 3 times I have been out. Had this gun out many times over the past 20 years without a hitch. Light hit rounds worked ok in MG 42, same outing. Any suggestions? heckinohio@hypercon.net

There could be a build-up of gunk between the face of the trunnion block and the square head on the barrel which can cause the gun to be very tight when going into battery. Pull the whole barrel assembly out and make sure all faces are clean and lightly oiled. Another problem could be a build-up in the front of the chamber causing tight headspace. Good luck!

worn gibbs and excess head space will also cause this problem. One of the mail culprits also was the Turkish 8mm that is being sold as surplus. Primers are very hard and of questionable quality (poor storage) Do NOT use this ammo in a 42 or you run the risk of blowing it up due to the bolt bouncing. Just repaired a 34 that a chum hatched with this stuff.

woodsy; I always remove the complete reciprocating assembly from the gun after firing and hose it down with suitable cleaning solution vapor at 100# pressure, then blow dry with air alone, relubricate/inspect on reassembly. I am unable to find any indication of a build up anyplace. I am headed out to clean the receiver as stated above as we speak.
warren; I hate to admit it, but I cant identify Turk ammo. And I used 5 different 8mms all with the same result. Both my MG 42s have anti-bounce device in the bolts, as do the several spares I have..........
Vickers gives no indication of excessive headspace, no broken brass and I used Forsters 'go-no go' gauges in it, tight on 'no go' but did close, couldnt get field gauge in the extractor due to thicker rim on the gauge. I cant find any excessive wear on anything, all seems tight but as I have only one gun, nothing to compare. I do have a box of spares and will look to change the top cover hoping to alter the timing a bit....as I stated, the firing pin is actually released by the safety device in the bottom of the lock, the sear bar only starts and stops the gun.
