Revised the mancarry section with a framework established for what different gun numbers carried. I intend to complete this with re-enacted photos.

Is there any information about the use of the Vickers machinegun (presumaby the Mk1 as the RN only ever seems to have been issued with Army leftovers in small weapons) during WW1 on RN steam pinnaces? I am involved with the only surviving and operational steam pinnace (199) which has an original type Hotchkiss 3pdr on a mounting forward. Loads of pictures on the web under "Pinnace 199". Understand the Vickers was mounted on the cabin roof during WW.

I haven't any information on that at the moment. I am working through loads of reference materials at the moment so would have to see if there is anything in there. Sounds interesting though!

Just to correct my message Reply #4 on Jul 26, further research reveals that the gun on the pinnace was not a Vickers but a Maxim. Does your interest stretch that far or am I "out of bounds"! We have found a deactivated Mk1 Vickers with an offer of a loan when Pinnace 199 steams into the Southampton Boatshow on 11 Sept. I doubt if many attendees will be able tell the difference until we find a Maxim.

Hello Martin, I had noticed on the photos that is was a Maxim; however, I was trying to find whether a Vickers had been used at all.
In simple terms, you are not going to find a British Maxim in the commercial market. A Vickers is the simplest solution; even better as a loan.

Martin, I have a .303 British Maxim (not for sale, I hasten too add!) and I am in the business of manufacturing all-metal museum-grade replica machine guns. I could make a replica of the Maxim if required at about NZ$3,000 (roughly 1,000 Pounds). Not cheap, but probably less than 5% of the cost of an original, should the unlikely event of one coming up for sale occur!

Many thanks to Rod for his offer to manufacture a replica Maxim but as a volunteer organisation, it is way beyond our budget. We are currently starting a fundraising campaign to give our steam pinnace its 100-year refit. This has to take priority. We mounted a Vickers Mk1 on the aft cabin for the 2009 Southampton Boatshow and fired a couple of simulated rounds from the 3pdr Hotchkiss. 199, an "armed steamed pinnace" as it was advertised, seems to have been well received and created a lot of interest. She is the only surviving operational steam pinnace. Have a look at: www.nationalhistoricships.org.uk/ships_register.php?action=ship&id=40

I have completed the page on 'Tankettes'. Interesting vehicles!
I've also added pages ready to complete on 'Ships' and 'Armoured Cars'.
