Another thought on pack saddlery, the Bren saddlery spares box greatly resembles the Lewis one in the photo I have (externally the only differeance is the tail the working end of the cleaning rod goes into thats missing onthe Lewis version)
With the Bren version of the saddlery spares box internally theres always been a question why theres the wooden block with the big semi circular cut out in the lid and what were the two small buckled straps for . Looking at the spares kit for the the Lewis it had a spare barrel , gas cylinder and a spare piston. Also somewhere it says that the cleaning rod was stored inside the spare barrel and kept it in place in the spares bag so i'm guessing the box is another recycled Lewis bit, like the infantry version magazine carriers, and the cut out is to fit the barrel and the two straps are for either (or both, one inside the other) the spare cylinder or piston. The Mk I Lewis cylinder rod is of a size for the Mk I Bren and ditto for the Brush and mop so there wouldn't be a need to change the design. Certainly Bren magazine carriers where made with deviders for the Lewis pans, which then had to be removed to take Bren mags, one assumes in pairs of utility pouches or some other containers rater than loose.
