Hello folks, I was recently looking at some stuff on the web and found a list from SA about small arms being destroyed. The post was from the autumn of 2004. It mentioned various weapons, of which there was BREN LMG 3,637 items. Did they get totally written off or did some get de-act? Regards MGibbs

Hi Matt , I do belive you are talking about the great south african dunk fest. Thousands of weapons were dropped into the oggin . And to all intents and purposes if you have the coords and are capable of diving very deep you may find a pile of rusty crap by now . This would be a good time for Pete Wells to comment as i suspect he may have some info on this . Hes commented before with some distress so i believe sod all was rescued

I pressume the article is refering to the 7.62 mm variety ? If so Peter has got one - www.saaaca.org.za/links/SIG/bren/762bren.htmPic of an SA Bren in action - As for .303 Brens I have seen a couple of MkI's about with the SA mark of U to the top rear of the reciever near the serial number.

- Hi guys. Sorry for the delay in repsonding but it takes that long for my blood pressure to drop to realistic levels! ALL Brens (original .303" and converted 7.2mm guns) in SANDF inventory at that time were destroyed - chopped up into little bits on equipment paid for and supplied by the f...... Norwegian govt. I understand that we don't do the 'dump at sea' thing anymore for two reasons - a) the primary dumping site, a deep volcanic crater of the Cape Town coast, is now 'full' and b) for environmental reasons. It is obviously a highly restircted area but a diver showed me some pics he took before being chased away and it was awesome - aerial bombs, torpedos etc. etc. etc. Some ammo dumping has taken place off Durban over the years but beyond the continental shelf so no chance of salvage there. Fortunately a few Brens were not in the inventory at that time due to various factors (incl the fact that some 7.62mm guns were sent to Rhodesia in the 70s and landed up in collectors hands - now being sold off due to financial hardships up there. Curses on Mugabe's head too!) and now reside in museums and private collections, less than a dozen I reckon.
