I aquired the holdall and wallet below at Stoneliegh and I am coming to the conclusion that they are either Chinese or Vietnamese made. Construction is very poor quality with much hand sewing. A used/worn example of the wallet was seen in Laos last year by one of our brethren, notable with one of those soviet style round two section oilers in the top "oil can" pocket/holder. I'm not really up on Chinese cleaning kits etc but do know they had plenty of 7.92mm Brens and did convert them to take AK 47 type magazines/ammunition and supplied them to client states like North Vietnam. I have also been told of similar holdalls with oriental style chracters / writing on them. Does anyone know anything about this type of bren kit? ATB Tom

Kev may have some idea as he has had some funny stuff , i think he may be the one with an italian post war made bren holdall ,
And im i am not trying tobe funny or anything , but with thier reputed expertise and ability to bang out a suit in about an hour , i would have expected a better showing on the manufacture of a cloth item such as that , looks like my first attempt at stitching webbing ! tim

Italian holdall is like a sharp cut Milan bespoke suit compared with Toms sweat shop jobby ! ;D I would love an example of the 'sweat shop' wallet and holdall if anyone else knows where there is one I can remember imported Hong Kong made goods in the 60's and they were extremely shoddy , more interesting if they are Chinese ,how did they end up over here ? I was very tempted to suggest the wallet was a lightened airborne version ;D

A page from a 1943 Chinese weapons manual,if the same attention was paid to the drawrings as to webbing it might explain allot ;D !

The straps look very similar to the type I saw on Iraqi Ak webbing equipment last year, there was also alot of Chinese Ak type56?? rifles around, so perhaps they were imported as a job lot.

In the back of Brayleys excellent little book on UK Webbing (about the same sizes as a Osprey MAA) theres a shot of Khaki 44 Pat ex Iraqi army and it says "Some examples of "Iraqi 44" webbing were found to have labelling showing that they were made in China".
Its a cracking book for 11 quid, Published as Europa Militaria No. 32 British Web Equipment of the Two World Wars by Crowood Press ISBN1 86126 743 6
