The holes in the feet are inherited from the ZB where the holes were used for staking the feet for firing on fixed lines. The snow shoes were used to stop the bipod feet sinking into snow, the same priciple as for human feet

Matt, Snow shoes are flat mesh plates that bold onto the feet of the bipod of the 7.62 L4 to spread the weight of the gun when firing on snow.

or I will cry and throw teddy right out of the pram!
Theres 2 other versions as well, a strange Canadian stap between the feet affair and a WWII UK one (possibly originally Canuck as well) thats a pair of issue ski pole baskets with special leather tabs to hold them on.

I'd just love to be a picture editor in some of the books and magazines that illustrate some of these items. I'd spend all day airbrushing in ficticious items of kit that some crazed collector (no offence Tom ;D ) would spend half his life trying to track down ;D ........maybe someone is allready doing it ?
