It will be interesting to see who the insignia belongs to Any idea if it has a serial number on the box ? Can you find out any background about the box from the seller ?

Hey thier , Cool find.. ;D Must have been in the bino case a while.....you can see the weave from the webbing imprinted on the curved edges of the box.
Have been looking for the unit sign but no luck so far. I dont think div insignia were approved til late 40 so i dont think it will be a BEF unit. It may be a sub unit as i think we had at least one div with crossed axes as a sign. Will let you know if i find anything out. Any thing extra markings wise on the bino case ? regards Tim PS Does the bino case have strap buckles on the side or just the belt hooks ?

I dont think the bino case is original as its Canadian marked and dated 1940 or 44, when I get home I'll have a look at it again

Hi thier,
The PL/1939 stamp is plessy, should have something on your steel work on the sight along a similar line .
The Cbroad arrow is curious as it is actually stamped on the sight i have just bought. Right on the bottom of the dovetail mount part i have a sort of compressed C with broad arrow thro it and the figure 210 underneath. Any one else got this marking ?
The dovetail base ( cast portion )has been struck no less than five times with small circles with PL and a number ( presumably Plessy process inspection marks) The rest of it has nothing so far (but it does need cleaning )
Regards Tim

My box has the same markings as Clark's (PL 1 over 1939 and C with one arrow over 559).

Hi Everyone I find these additional markings on the FL sights and boxes fascinating. My box has that same large `C` stamp with two arrows crossing through it and then the number 32 or possible 82 below that. My sight has that `C` stamp with a single arrow going through it and below that the number 224. It might be interesting to catalogue these additional markings in relation to the serial numbers. Perhaps some order might become apparent and perhaps help to explain the wide range of serial numbers or how they were issued. What do you guys reckon, do you think it might be worth checking out. Anyway thats my 2p worth. Best Regards Peter

Somewhere I actually have a Vickers MG Tripod with the C-and-single-arrow-through-it stamped into it and had presumed it was an early variation on the Canadian Ordnance stamping in a similar manner to the variations of Australian and South African ordnance stampings which are covered by "Broad Arrow" (Skennerton).
Would be nice to find out for sure.

There is the chance that they could be inspectors' marks, hence the different styles and numbers. Of course, the inspectors were usually on the manufacturers premises and I can't imagine that Plessey would have made the boxes. Has anyone contacted Plessey to see if they have any info in their archives?

The bottom of my sight dovetail shows the C arrow and 500 under it.

Detail from DDE 2089 Bren FLS Box - The 1 over 1939 denotes it as a MKI type. As for the C /i\ mark , for my 2p's worth I would have thought it to be a subcontractors mark ? The 'C' not being in any typeface style and the arrow having a shaft to it rather than a 'crows foot' or 'broad arrow' PS , Big pictures are fine ...... but anything bigger than a page width makes reading the thread a pain
