I am in the process of replacing the mk 2 buttstock on my mk1 bren, I have acquired a Mk1 trigger/buttstock group but cant remove the buttstock. I have removed the spring, cylinder nut, etc.. but I cant remove the wood buttstock itself. Am I missing something here?

Have you removed the nut that holds the butt on (I'm not sure if thats what you meant by cylinder nut), you will know as you can then remove the butt plate retainer. If you have, the only other thing can be a tight fit. You may have to wiggle it or twist it.
Do you have a tripod? You could put the butt mounting lugs into the mounting point on the front of the tripod and gently tap the lower slide with a soft mallett.

From the begining - Remove butt plate (8) Push in and give the return spring tube cap (16) a quarter of a turn and withdraw slowley as the spring is acting against it. Withdraw return spring and rod (15,19) Unscrew return spring tube nut (18) which is held very slightly by a detent (17) When this has been taken off, the butt plate catch assembly (11,9,etc) can be eased out of the butt. The only thing stopping the butt coming off now is friction ,varying in degrees from it will just slide off to ####### tight ! If the latter, use your skill and judgement along with a large soft faced mallet and persuade the butt to part company from the return spring tube and where the butt is located in the butt group. Usually this can be achieved by firmly tapping the mounting bracket (1) Do not twist the butt until the location pegs are clear of their location holes.

thanks for the input, I have removed the return spring tube nut, return spring and rod. I guess the buttstock is just bloddy tight to the tube. I will try the soft mallet and "persuading" it. I just wanted to make sure I hadnt missed anything.....
thanks to kev, and britplumber for the help...

Good point Kev, Shouldn't have said 'twist it', should've left it at wiggle it!
