Hi all - was reccomended this forum after posting a query overon the gunboards forum. I've recently found a WW2 dated Mk1 Bren Gun for sale in the UK. It's pre-1995 deactivated, so is still strippable. It appears to be in reasonably good condition (although the seller states its condition is "used" - but i've added a photo below) and comes with the 30round mag and folding bipod. Is £190 a good price for this? Any help is much appreciated Max

Hello, I'm not an expert but, It is a reasonable price if it was in that condition! Unfortunately they are not, they are in a sorry state... Big chunks missing from the stock and pistol grip, Broken forsight, Cracked and nearly falling off carrying handel, NO Breech Block, and full of metal grindings from the deactivation process! You are better shopping around to be honest... (Helston Gunsmiths) Pay a litlte more and get a better example...

So - are you recommending Helston or are you saying to avoid them?

So - are you recommending Helston or are you saying to avoid them? Sorry My friend, I was a unclear... Don't buy from them..... Try Cobbaton Combat! I have no financial interest in this company what so ever but have dealt with them on several occasions! I bought my BREN (Inglis) from Helston. They only have the Inglis (Canadian built BREN) in stock and don't have the English ones.. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with the Inglis. If you really want one that is in good condition go elsewhere. For an extra £30-40 you could get a nice example. Here is the ULR for Cobbaton. www.cobbatoncombat.co.uk/sales/deac.htmI'm sure other people on this forum would agree. Another tip, try and view the the item before you buy, don't be tempted (like I was) to buy on a whim over the net. Regards John

i bought my '43 lithgow from helston (most local gunshop to me) and although it was covered in paint, it did clean up surprisingly nicely!
however, this was a few years ago, price was a little less and i also got the pick of the bunch. from what i have seen of the ones they have there now (actually in person, not pics) they aren't TOO bad if you are will to put some work into them (which in my view is all part of the fun), however the price is perhaps a little steap for what you get, you could try and make them an offer?
i would advise an in person transaction though, so ou could choose the one you want.
with that, if you're doing it mail order, i would go with someone else if you're looking for a nice clean example.

Defiantly worth a try, I can recommend them too, I got my Bren from them last Thursday! Might be worth a call before traveling as mine was one of two Brens on show for sale alongside a Daimler built one, although its well worth it for the museum itself, its a great place! Ollie
