Bren article in The Times (1935)

Just doing a bit of research and came across this interesting article in The Times on the 02 August 1935 about the adoption of the Bren. Thought it might be of interest. It is at the bottom left of the page.

...The Vickers Berthier was taken into use recently by the Indian Army authorities, and the Bren is selected for the British Army ... The tests of the two types were exhaustive, and though there is not much difference in merit between them certain features favour the former. In any case it is considered sound to have both weapons in service, as none is better....

I've always wondered why about they adopted two different LMG's at the same time, and this article doesn't really give a good answer.

Anyone have any thoughts?
