The 7.92mm Combination Tools The Besa Combination tool Mk I (BG4731) was officially introduced in LoC B 3713 of 1940 along with the gun and various accessories. In the words of the entry: "Tool, combination, Besa 7.92-mm., M.G., Mk. 1.-The body of the tool is shaped at one end to form a spanner for the gas cylinder sleeve and at the other end to fit over the knob of the carrying handle to enable the tool to be used as a grip when removing a hot barrel. One side of the tool is cut away to form a "C" spanner for removing the flash eliminator. The spanner end of the tool is provided with a copper hammer. The handle is of "U" shaped cross-section and accomodates 2 forked and 2 plain screwdrivers retained in the handle by an axis pin." It is a exact copy of the one for the ZB37. UK examples are marked with the broad arrow on the steel body and copper hammer. The much simplified Mk II Combination tool (BG4732) was introduced with LoC B5286 of November 1941 which also made the Mk I version obsolescent. By 1949 a copper hammer head as used on the Mk I tool and Mk I Bren Combination had been incorporated, although no designation change was made. Drawing taken fom the 1956 Illustrated Parts List I'm still looking for a minty modified Mk II, they have so far only turned up without the hammer fitted. ATB Tom
