I have just added the above item to my collection . Marked 'Plug Clearing Gun Lewis .303" No2 B.S.A.' - in near mint condition. A scarce item in this part of the world (SA) and was wondering how many have survived the ravages of time.

Peter,
Actually, more than you'd think. I have three of them. The best I just purchased from a gentleman in England in absolutely as-new condition and I think I paid about $65 for it (plus shipping of course). They show up on ebay periodically, as do the spanners.

Thanks for the input Harry
Interesting that the condition is so good - a tribute to the workmanship of the period?
Cheers for now.

They seem to be one of the few Lewis bits commonly available in Canada. There was an interesting one on E-bay recently, apparently for the American guns which had the spanner built into the handle. I was tempted as I have managed to break one of the lugs off of my spanner. It is still usable, but only in one direction. :-)

How rare are the Lewis BCEs with out the handle? I was given one as a "don't know what this is" when I bought some Besa tools 2 Beltrings back. Its the sort with the button on the base.
Dead like the one on page 196 of Gun Tools Volume 2

It also appears in some parts list I have.

Heres a pic of the thing, From the UK parts list for the .30 cal M1917 Lewis its the "Shell extractor" in US parlance and "Plug, clearing, Lewis, .30in., M.G., U.S.A. BE 5119" in UK... So are they rare or laying around in bucket loads? It was a freebie anyway. I assume it came over with all the Home Guard / DEM used .30 guns. ATB Tom
