Just looking at some new (to me) documents got at Beltring and one mentions that the Mk V cleaning rod, the sort with a fixed loop handle as found in some Bren chests , wasn't introduced in a LoC (4740 as it happens) until June 1941.
All the best
Tom
PS still looking for one of these suckers

Have a spare cleaning rod or maybe 2, swivel 'D' shaped handle, all steel, marked with Broad Arrow stamp, and manufacturer's ? stamp 'H' in a circle/oval, with blued sliding oiler/ (other) weapon muzzle protector, seems to be same as photos of pre-war bren rods in chests - any good to you?

Hi The Mk V is the one with the fixed handle unfortunately BUT I am looking for one with the steel bush as well as it happens since I'd like to do a red back photo to illustrate the following paragraph from a little piece I have done on cleaning rods. I Have a Mk II "B", just need to get the other two.
Spacing, italics etc gone to pot cutting and pasting but here it is...
"Part of the equipment stored in the Brens chest was various marks of cleaning rod, most usually the Rod, cleaning, .303-in. M.G., Mk II “B”, with the stores code BD 2553, of steel construction with a rotating loop handle and about 30 inches long with a eyelet at the working end for a piece of flannelette. LoC B1526 of March 1938 gave approval for the issue of the Mk.II .303-in cleaning rod (LoC 18581 of October 1915 had introduced this for use with the Maxim, Vickers and Lewis) without the steel bush for use with the Bren .303-in M.G. The Rod with the the bush changed nomenclature to Rod, cleaning, .303-in. M.G., Mk II “A“ but kept the stores code BD 2552. This Mk. II”B” rod fitted inside, or rather through, the leather Case, accessories, Bren (part of the pack saddlery for that LMG) along with a cylinder cleaning rod of which ever mark was then current.
The simpler, Rod, cleaning, .303-in. M.G., Mk V, with the stores code BD 9225, is also shown in various parts lists and is encountered in chests with their original contents. It was introduce in LoC B 4740 of June1941 and is described as having a fixed loop handle for use with all M.G.s."
If you could drop us a line about the Mk II "A"...
Cheers ;-{D)

Silly question, but does the "Fixed Loop" mean the handle doesn't fold over, or does it mean the rod doesn't rotate as if running down the rifling in the barrel?

The rod doesn't rotate in relation to the handle, it's all made from one bit of steel rod. I'll do a photo with dimensions as soon as I can secure examples of all three types.
I've done pics for the rest of the article but for some reason I just can't get a Mk V rod to do! They used to be a common as muck!
Aghhhhh!

Picked up another non Bren rod, a slightly used Armourers No. 4 carbine cleaning rod, stamped up with its NSN code. £2 on my favourite stall at Burnley Flea.

Hi guys; have 1 = that is one only remaining - loop handled cleaning rod with removable bush/muzzle protector thingy. bright steel, protector thingy blued. markings - just - broad arrow - and letter H in an oval/ circle on both items. would swop or (part)exchange to mutual satisfaction for either a ww2 dated WD 4 ton screw jack (as in lifting vehicles) which might be marked 'jack light tank' and sits on an approx 8" square flat baseplate, and has an unusual loop attached to the side of head piece; or, for WS19 radio set, the tie down webbing strap and clips; post is about £4. any interest?
