Hi, Does anyone know when the H51 type Ammunition box (thin plywood metal reinforced corners) was first used in anger? I have a 44 dated one but can't find any evidence of it in use during the war (ww2) Was it designed for use in the Far East with the '44 patt kit? Any thoughts / replies much appreciated. Cheers, Gary

My copy of Army Ordnance Services Part 7 Pamphlet No.11 dated 24th February 1945 has no mention of the H50/51/52 Ammunition boxes. Pamphlet 11A dated 1st April 1949 speaks of the new "Universal S.A.A. Packages" and says "These packages were introduced during the late war in order to give full protection to ammunition carried into jungle and tropic zones. The steel outer box is designed mainly to provide protection during transport and storage and during free or parachute dropping from aircraft."
