Is anybody aware at what point during the Great War the Hotchkiss was issued to troops?
There is currently a debate going on at the 'Digger-History' forum which is surrounding what light machine guns were used at Gallipoli and any assistance would be appreciated.
Regards
Richard

Hi Richard All of the research I have done on the ANZAC participation at Gallipoli only shows one type of MG and that is the Model 1893 .303 Maxim on the Mk IV tripod. The Hotchkiss LMG was issued in Egypt prior to the Palestine campaign, after the troops had been evacuated from Gallipoli. The Hotchkiss was issued to the Aussie Light Horse, and NZ Mounted Rifle units, and remained with them until the 1930's. The Maxims were used by MG Squadrons attached to the Infantry units, and moved around as required by the Infantry Commanders. The Maxims were replaced by Vickers in 1916-17. The Lewis was also used by the Infantry in Palestine, but probably not at Gallipoli (never seen any evidence of that). Hope this helps!
