Hello Can anyone out there give me any information on the 08/15 buttstock please? I have one which has a recess in the back edge which I assume was made to hold an oil bottle, cleaning kit etc., was this normal? Should there be a cover for this hole as there is none present on mine and I can't think how the bits and bobs would have stayed in place without. Many thanks Karl

There should be a wooden plug to cover the hole, the hole was'nt used to house anything, it was there to reduce overall weight of the gun. Do you have a complete gun? Mark

Hi Karl, Is the hole on the top rear of the stock? If so you are correct it did hold the oil bottle. Just had a look at Wa 8/9 - Das MG08/15 by Hauptmann H. Floeck (my one was printed in the 30's) and it clearly shows it there. It was a post WW1 modification to the gun. In the picture it looks like there was no cover the bottle sat in the hole securely. Cheers Taihakapu.

The plug in the o8/15 butt stock was just glued in and many have fallen out over the years. Any guns that were stored in either extremely damp or dry locations have had the plugs fall out. The glue appears to be just hide glue and over the years it just deteriorated and the plug falls out. The cavity was just for lightening the gun. You can see many other lightening features on the gun as well.

I opened up the wooden butt stock of my 08/15 and found a packet of German f*gs!! and not the 'Little Britain' variety before anyone asks I did see the other day an interesting picture of an 08/15 with no wooden stock in an AA role. Just thought I would throw that in. Mark

I've also seen photos of MG08/18 that clearly shows the oil bottle in the stock. I believe it's a late late late development in the war, perhaps only by 1 maker at the time, but one that was picked up post war as a good development. I've also seen MG08/15's in WWII that didn't have the oil can in the butt stock, so they didn't go back and retro-fit the ones they had.

I can confirm that the matching # stock on my DW&MF 1918 MG08/15 also has a matching # oil brush inlet into the top of the stock, with imperial proofs, so this is definately at least one maker WWI thing, not just in the 30's.
