I went to look at a "Japanese" machine gun today, but it turns out to be a Chinese Maxim on tripod.
The action has a brass plate on the left side with reversed swastika. Chinese character writing that I suspect says the date, 21, and also appears to say 79 so I'm guessing originally 7.92x57. The top plate has what could be a fifties date and 7.62, so again I'm guessing that it had been converted to 7.62x54.
It is a deactivated gun, here in the UK. If anyone is looking for one, PM me and I'll tell you who has it.
I didn't ask the price but suspect it will be around the same as a Vickers.

Kev,
No sorry I didn't think about taking photos until after I'd left there, although I think the chap didn't want me wasting his time when he realised I wasn't going to buy it.

A batch came in from China about 20 years ago.
Made between the wars and converted as you say to Russian 7.64x54.
Unless you collect Maxims in general its a little hard to fit into a collection.

A number -- 10 or 20 -- made it to the US at that time. I have one but managed to lose the tripod. Anyone knowing of a tripod for sale, please email me. partykm@aol.com
