The short answer is there are a lot of ex British Army L1A1 rifles in the US as 'parts kits'. The problem is L1A1 rifles are classified by the BATF as Machine guns and unless you happen to have one of the few rifles that were imported prior to the ban back in the 60's Then after that the special 'non sear cut receivered' rifles that were imported in limited numbers up until 1988/89 when they brought in another ban. Generally the rifles available are 'G Serial numbered' FAL's, Steyr imports, and a limited number of 'Poyer' imported L1A1-A rifles.
There are some British rifles that were sold by Century Arms to LEO's ONLY, that have then been on sold to the public and there is some concern with how legal they are now.

That is the headache, YES L1A1 rifles are Semi automatic only but because they have a 'Safety Sear' and this sear requires a slot to be milled into the receiver the BATF then consider it to be a machine gun. It's really stupid but they make up the laws. The section of receiver they are referring to is in this pic:- Those rifles such as the Poyer L1A1-A rifles don't have this section milled out also all the aftermarket receivers for the parts kits (FAL/L1A1 etc) won't have this slot either. It's a touchy subject about the ownership of the ex-LEO ONLY guns. They are suppose to be only for LEO use. It's one of those grey areas
