I guess with the silk cord attached it becomes a plumb line?

I can't think of owt else, 5 foots surely too short to measure out anything like a aiming post.
I have the SAT photocopied so I guess i must sit down and read that. Eeeee! I'll have to actually read something!

Tom.
I've measured the hole in my screwdriver with a vernier guage, and it is 0.070", which is close to the recommended tapping size for 8BA.
As luck would have it, I have an 8BA tap in the garage, and it goes part way into the hole, just by rotating the tap between thumb and finger.
The hole is therefore 8BA or something very close to it.
I don't have an 8BA die, otherwise I'd make up a couple of threaded eyes.

Thats interesting. Theres a guy on Burnley flea Market every Wednesday who dels in old tool and especially thread cutting stuff, I should be able to get the required thingy. I was going to nobble him for a set of BA thread gauges anyway to go with a Whitworth one I had off him.
What I've not done yet is look up a DD(E) for any of it!

Spur of the moment purchase, an 8BA die is on it's way to me, courtesy of eBay. I'll make up a couple of threaded eyes and pop one in the post to you. Hopefuly it'll fit yours ok.

Thanks, that very good of you. :-{D)
I'm wondering what sort of silk chord it would be? The heaviest gauge I have acces to would be embroidery thread, but thats rather loose and thin. We could twist three strands together unless someone could think of a better way.
Has any one got a real example out there?

Tom, if you are really interested, i know a source for 4.2" mortars, the early non-wheeled version and the the late trailer type.I nearly took the plunge and bought one, the early type, but the we had 9/11 and it became too difficult to import, and too expensive and i came to my senses!I've had a look at my 3" mortar sight, it's made by WESTINGHOUSE. i'l have ask Kev about a screwdriver and i haven't got the odds and sods in the little tin.The cord does seem to be similar to the Vickers aiming lamp cord, is that silk?

Cheers but with the restoration work on the house I won't be buying owt big for a long while! I think I'll stick to looking for stuff for the 2", the 4.2 sight was a bit of a spur of the moment thing.
As to the cord I really can't say, its all baffling me!

Hi Folks Can any one tell me what the going rate is for a sight like the one pictured above? I know it's a bit obscure and as ever it's a case of "it's worth what someone will pay for it" but whats a ball park figure? Searching the net I can't find any thats been sold to compare.
All the best
Tom
(the screwdriver I'm keeping if it does go to fund another purchase as its proper to something else)

Hi Folks the 4.2" mortar sight will be going up on eBay as soon as I can find the weight/ cost of postage. It doesn't really fit in the collection anywhere.
I'm going to thin down the collection and get shut of the ZB26 and accesories, including the unissued spares tin box, couple of mags, cover, sling etc. Also going to get shut of the Aussie Vickers and tripod. I'll do a proper add with pics in the relevant section when I get a moment.

By the by, Kevin G was able to confirm that the screwdriver he got me was indeed the correct "Screwdriver No. 7, Director Mk. 2" from the packing slip at Mikes where he got them from.
Nice one Kev. your a star!

Just noticed on Plate P of the 1945 version of the IPL inside the earlier version of the sight case/tin there is what can only be a spare cord for the screwdiver cum plumb line...
Finally got the weight of the sight and case, 7lb 1oz, so T will do the eBay thing tonight, will put a link up in the appropiate place when she has. Starting at 75 quid as no one could advise on a "usual" price.
Can hand deliver at Beltring on Friday or Saturday.
Postage via Parcel Force to the US is extortionate, at least £35, anyone know of a cheaper shipper?
