Hi Folks
somebody made a mistake and I was allowed to wander off by myself while we were in Wales on holliday and I sort of, well, acquired a rather nice Mk. 3 sight for the UK 4.2" Mortar.
Pictures to follow but it has the same "universal" dovetail as on the Bren Fixed Line Sight etc and is in remarkably good condition for a1945 made sight so I suspect it has been FTRed, it has a set of spares inside the carrying case but is missing the Screwdriver No. 7, Director Mk. 2 that is listed inside the lid and shown in the parts lists, so if anyone can direct me to one of those it would be appreciated.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it as I'm unlikely to get a 4.2" Mortar, I was looking for 2" bits at the time....

thanks for putting up the pics!
The tin could certainly take a 6 and a half inch screwdriver but I can't find a exact description of the size of it anywhere, it looks right anyway, cananyone advise?

Kev. What is the cord coming out of the handle end on that sketch? The screwdriver I picked up from Mike has a very small diameter hole, drilled and tapped in the handle end. I didn't notice it until now  |

I don't know 'G' I only do as Tom tells me .....eg "put up pics" ! ;D I know more about 110mm soil pipe than I do about mortars which doesn't help either  Is yours the same sort of screwdriver as the one in the photo ? |

Yes, its the same pattern screwdriver as the photo's you posted.
I didn't notice the hole until I looked at the grip end after seeing the sketch of the one with the cord.
I guess the hole is something like a 6BA, it really is small, but it's threaded!
OA the screwdriver is 6 3/16"
Tom,
Do you know what the cord is, and how it was attached?

George, screw driver in photo is on its way 'up north'. Can't honestly say I ever looked at it that closely to see if it was tapped in the top. Will have to wait for Tom to report back when the postie has been. Probably the only screw driver out of the batch that wasn't tapped !  ATB Kevin |

Hey Kevin
you don't have three foot bits of 6 inch dia pipe laying around do you? A certain mutual friend in Nevada is patiently waiting for his No. 12 Range Finder and I can't find a tube to pack it in! I keep sideling up to the numerous off cuts next to the holes in the road up here but they are always less than 5" dia! I'm also getting some funny looks from the hardhatted types in the holes...
I even tried to buy some but the buggers would only part with 12 foot lenghts for silly amounts.

Tom,
if you look in the copy of the identification list for the 3" mortar i sent you, you will see the screw driver listed.The cord is CORD BLACK SILK (5ft length) and is fitted with eye screwed.

Most 6 inch pipe is highway drainage and going to be quite heavy.
You might be better off making something out of thin ply with a batten frame ?
Will keep me eyes open for thin wall 150mm tube for you though.

The screwdriver that Kev sent (Ta!) did have a small screwed hole in it but when I tried to fit it in the tin it was a tiny amount too wide at the head to fit in the holder. Howevever from close inspection of the holder before and after I suspect that no screwdriver had previously been there, no scratches or wear marks etc before I started messing.
I'm tempted to do a little file work to the driver.
