Here in the U.S. there are right hand side plate constraints. A thick denial island must be in place before shaping the contour begins so that at no time during assembly will the plate be in violation. Except at the rear of an M2 browning plate the thickness is 3/16ths inch. All internals are installed through the backplate opening. In that area the ATF wants 1/2" thickness. Nothing can be installed conventionally with that much thickness in the way. They permitted me to have the bolt and barrel extension installed but I had to weld them in on the last one. On that one I had omitted the denial island which I wasn't aware of at the time. They were kind enough to let me correct the situation without having to go to jail! I will stay in touch with them during this build and invite them over again for final inspection before turning it loose to a customer.

Here are some more pictures of the ongoing progress. As you can see I've cut the guide ways off the back plate up to the last 3/16ths inch from the top. I left that little bit to fill the exposed opening on the top plate. I don't have a milling machine and I had no intention of filing the groove in the side plates to fit the back plate properly. I'll weld it in from the inside.

Here is the beginning of the bottom plate. You can see from this view how much I've removed from the trunnion to make the barrel line up. I'll replace the missing pieces after I've shaped them up to fit without interference.

The back plate is a pitted old reject from service. It probably saw service in WWll. Now it is relegated to the replica farm. I have three of them. This is the only one I've cut the guide ways off of.

Here is a jig I made to repair barrel supports with.

Note the trunnion shim to assist in rotation or alignment of parallel sides.

Trunnion repair issues. T'will be quite a task to straighten this out.

I ended up cutting this trunnion to pieces to make it straight enough for a barrel to go through the hole. It works fine now and all I lack is replacing the missing top where the cartridges slide across.

Here are a few more pictures of the progress. First of all a new addition to the shed has been installed. A mini fridge!
