There were about 48,000 Enfield made Double dovetails, the rest were the MK1 modified type.

What is the use of the double dovetail? Why they made it?

It was meant as an extra bracket for any sight including No.32 scope and other trialed sights.

Serial number is E 4291, a 4th stage intermediate Bren manufactured between end of October- start November 1940. I think there are about 8 different intermediates between true MKI's and MKIm's ? Brens custodian is now Tom

did it have the dimples? I see it has the squared mag catch housing, and non profiled receiver back end.
Do you know what the 8 stages were. Did it include things like changing the stamping 'BREN MK1' and the Crowned date to MK1, U, 1940?
The list I have so far is,
1. Full Mk1. 2. Full Mk1, but stamped Mk1, U, 1940 on right hand side of receiver. 3. Mk1 with dimples ommitted, Squared mag catch housing and squared profile at rear of receiver, Mk1, U, 1940 stamped on left hand side of receiver. 4. Mk1 as above but with Double Dovetail ommitted. 5. Mk1 as above but Reinforcing rib removed from Right hand side of receiver (mag housing). 6. Mk1 as above but fluted gas ports changed for D profiled gas ports as per full Mk1 modified spec.

I will have to search through old photos to see what details were ommited,or ask Tom.
Also have 1940 s/n F1428 that just retains the dished gas shield, fluted gas ports and rib to outside of mag well.

your 1941 Bren serial no. F9497 is the earliest full mk1m on the list. The last intermediate gun I have listed is F8126 of 1941 (just fluted gas ports).
Mike P. did F8618 but I've know idea what it was.

I just picked up an Inglis with a double dovetail. Oddity about this one is that it's a mk1M. I thought the deletion of the dovetail was one of the primary changes to 1M, but I guess there must have been some overlap.
The receiver was a Cdn government cut-up, with a single cut just forward of the barrel nut, so I can't say as to whether the piston area is correct for this gun. But the rear portion of the receiver is uncut.
First Cdn 1M I have seen with double dovetails.
